IN COLONY

The seizure of a quantity of obscene picture books imported from France, which were being sold at $3.50 each at the Kwong Hul shop, Queen's Road Central, formed the subject of an ap plication for confiscation before Mr. Wynne-Jones in the Central Police Court this morning.

Ав по representative of the shop was present, the oooks and a few indecent picturea were lodged with the Court for seven days.

Detective-Inspector Elston, said it was more in regard to the price of the books than anything else that investigations were made. They were not of the usual ob- scenity. The books were import- ed from France and this was the first seizure in the Colony.

SUN SPOTS MAKE BAD TRADE

AN ECONOMIST'S THEORY

28

- Sunspots were mentioned possible causes of bad trade by: Mr. Herbert Stanley Jevons, a former Professor of Economics at Rangoon University and son of Professor William Jovone, the famous economist, before the Roy- al Statistical Society In London. "The actual average intervals," ho said, "between commercial crises and the times when sun spots reached their maximum per lods, from 1700 to 1870 almost coincided, so that. the theory that solar influences are largely sponsible, through the crops, for the crises which follow booms has not been disproved."

ro-

Sir Josiah-Stamp, chairman of the London Midland and Scottish Ballway and a past president of the Royal Statistical Society, re- ferring to the speech, said: "The subject is by no means new. The theory was elaborated by the fa thor of Mr. Stanley Jevons, and his son not unnaturally attaches more Importance to It than, some people might. -

"The Influence that sun spota, through weather conditions, exert on trade cycles is recognised, but It is an influence that is not per- mitted to reign alone.

"There are such things ns the discovery of goldfield, wars, and all sorts of contingencies, which help to mould a trade boom or a depression, and it is usolCUS in these circumstances to build or plan too much on trade prospects
