TINY GUNBOAT

H.M.8. SANDPIPER'S CHRISTENING

Shanghai, June B. H.M.S. Sandpiper, which was built in England and shipped in packing cases to the Orient, and was reassembled at the Klangnan Docks here, was launched yesterday afternoon, Mrs. Mauchan; wife of the docks manager, performing the the christening.coremony.

H.M.S. Sandpiper replaces H.M.S. Moorhon and is the sixth and smal- leat addition to the river gunboat floot, attached to the China Flotilla, commissioned since the Great War, Tho Htilo vessel draws only two feet of water, yet she is a fighting

craft.

The dedication ceremony WAS performed by Dean Trivett and the Rev. Mr. Harthan. The ship was named by Mrs. Mauchan in the pre- sence of the Acting-Consul General, Mr. Davidson. A number of Chin- ese and foreign naval officers and numerous elvillan spectators, in- cluding hundreds of Chinese, gathered around the slipway to watch the launching.

Following the ceremonial prayers, a blessing and a verse of the Na- tional Anthem, Mrs. Mauchan broke a bottle of champagne over H.M.S. Sandpiper's bows. The little ship alipped into the Whangpoo to the atralna of "A Life on the Ocean. Wave."

Rear-Admiral Hill, senior naval officer on the Yangtzo, sont a bou- quet to Mrs. Mauchan, which was handed to her by Lieut.-Comman- der Asho, commander of H.M.S. Sandpiper.
