CINEMA SCREENINGS.
NOTES SUPPLIED BY THE
THEATRES ****
In that small and select Hollywood colony that traces Its rise on tho screen through the prize ring, Con- way Tearle is in a class-by-himself, For him there was no oscillating bo- tween the stage and the ring, no alternating acting and fighting. Cons way Tearle was a prize-fighter, and when he decided to become an actor, he forgot completely about padded gloves and canvas floors.
Tearle got his first engagement at the Drury Lane Theatro in London, and it was only a short time later that he appeared in support of such stars as Sir Charlos Wyndham, Mary Moore, Ellen Terry and Lena Ashwell,
He made his American stage debut with Grace George. Later he appear- ed with Ethel Barrymore, Billie Burke, Viola Allen Julia Marlowe, Emily Stevens and Helen Mencken among other outstanding women of the stage. Stage work has occupied most of Tearle's time recently. He went back to motion pictures to play In "The Palag Madonan.". His fatest in an Important role in "Man About Town," now at the King'a Theatre with Warner Baxter in the leading male role and Karen Morley in the featured feminine role. Others in the cast are Teni Lilian Bond, Alan Mowbary, Stengel, Lawrence Grant and Halti- well Hobbes.
"Men Must Fight.” Something new in screen produc- tion is offered by Metro-Goldwyn- "Men Must Fight, featur- Mayer in ing Diana Wynyard, Lewis Stone, Philips Holmes, May Robson and Ruth Selwyn and opening on Sunday at the Queen's Theatre. It is a pic ture which attempts to depict condi- tions at the outbreak of a new war, presumably in 1940.
The picture is based on the Reginald Lawrence-5. K. Lauren play which comment when
caused wldespreny. In deciding
produced on
to bring the play to the yerten, M-G-M's production minds enlarged the stage upan possibilities, which producers,
through choice or either the natural limitation of the speaking alage passed up. The things which, un the stage, were merely talked about the outbreak of the war in 1940 with a spectacular air raid on New York City--the changes in styles and architecture-these are the things which the film version particularly stresses.
Impressionistic Sets.
19
All the sets were designed Cedric Gibons, designer of the interior of "Grand Hotel," envisioned them for 1910. und Adrian, celebrated fashion nuthority, created gowns for: the picture which were calculated to reflect the styles seven years ahead.
Together with Diana Wynyard, who scored in Rasputin and the Empress and "Cavalcade," Lewis Stone, Phillips Holmes, May Robson, and Ruth Selwyn, the cast of "Men Must Fight": Jncludes Robert Young, Robert Greig, Hedda Hopper, Donald Dillaway, Mary Carlisle and Luis Albern!,
Contrasting the war of the past with the war of the future, the story mainly concurns the efforts of 11 woman who has lost her lover through one war, to prevent her son front being forced into sorvico through false patriotism. By plcturing the terrors of the warfare of the future, it be comes a powerful and stirring drama- Lie argument against war.
"Men of Chance."
Villains of yesterday are heroes of to-day's film, and yesterday's heroes' are to-day's most popular Villains Recording to Ricardo. Cortez, Tixing star of the new regime. Cortez, noted for both types of film portrayals plays opposite Mary Astor in "Men of Chance" now showing at the Central Theatre. John Halliday, Kitty Kelly and other favourites form an excellent cant with Miss Astor and Ricardo Cortez in "Men of Chance,' which presents the people of the race track not so much as puppets of ex- citing melodrama-but as rest buman beings enacting a thrilling love story. "Bachelor's Affaira”
Adolphe Menjou is the most in-† dependent actor in Hollywood. He is bound by contruct to no studio and being one of the few motion picture stars who has saved his money, is in regards as worth while.
