THE GREATER BODLEIAN
FINANCIAL ASPECT OF £944,000 SCHEME
ROCKEFELLER GIFT CONDITIONS
Oxford.
A Decree expressing thanks to generous bonefactors who since May, 1931, have contributed no less than £140,000 toward the cost of axtending the Bodleian Library has been passed in Congregation at Oxford.
The total cost of the expansion is estimated at £944,300, and of this the Rockefeller Foundation has offered three-fifths on condition that the University provides the re- maining two-fifths (£377,720).
Dr. Home Dudden, Master of Pembroke, said that the present library buildings would reach saturation point in 1934. The generous nature of the contributions had exceeded all expectations. The City Corporation, the City com- panies, and financial houses and Individual benefactors had realised that the Bodielan was not merely a famous academic library, but an institution of national and inter- national importance.
$132,000 Still Required "To fulfil the e conditions laid down by the Rockefeller Foundation," Dr. Dudden continued, “£182,314" still to be raised by the University. It is hoped to collect this aum by a general appeal to
to the public when
the altuation becomes favourable.
Meanwhile, however,
since it is obviously of extreme importance that the Rockefeller benefnetion should become available as soon as possible, the University is asked to guarantee for the maintenance ex- penses of the new library until such time as funds can be raised for their endowment, such an annual payment as would be accepted by the Foundation as equivalent to the outstanding capital sum of £132,- 314.
"An annual payment of £7,000 will be accepted дя moro than equivalent to this capital aum. Hence, if the University will con sent- and both the Council and tho Chest advise that it may do 80 without extravagant risk-to pledge itself to this annual payment, the Foundation's conditions will have been fulfilled, and the Foundation in consequence will start making Its contributions by instalments as and when expenditure is incurred."
