CORRESPONDENCE.
Empire Day
To The Editor Hongkong Telegraph Sir-After having read so much about Empire Day and Empire Week in the papers recently, and being a newcomer to the colony, I left home this morning overflow- ing with the joy of being an! Englishning in an English colony. Imagine my amazement when I discovered that out of the seven clubhouses I passed in Hany Valley, only one was flying the Union Jack, and on arriving in the town itself was more amazed to discover that the majority of flags were being flown by Chinese firms and not by the English busi ness houses who are participating in the Empire Exhibition.
Is it not about time that the Englishmen in this colony practise what they preach.

BRITISH REPLY TO ROOSEVELT MESSAGE:
London, May 21.
The British Ambassador in Wa shington, Sir Ronald Lindsay, to- day delivered the following reply. to President Roosevelt's recent message:---
"His Majesty's Government i the United Kingdom have read with much appreciation the mes
age which the President of the United States has addressed to the henda of all countries participat- ing in the Disarmament and co- nomic Conferences, on 16th May, "His Majesty's Government feel that the action which Mr. Rause velt has taken in addressing this message to the peoples of the world is of the highest importance and is well calculated to further the aim which His Majesty's Gov- erument have striven to secure, namely, the success of the two world conferences. They entire- ly share the President's view that on the successful outcome of these conferences hang the future hap pinces and prosperity of the world. ENCOURAGING FEATURES, "They are all the more encourag- ed by Mr. Rousevelt's message be- cause the Prealdent places as the first step of his programumo the adoption of the draft disarmament convention presented to the Dlaar- mament Conference by the Prime Minister on the 16th March last.
"His Majesty's Government see! In this an earnest of the Inten- tion of the United States Govern- ment to colinborate at Geneva in pressing for the general adoption of this draft convention as a whole.
"His Majesty's 'Government be- leve, for their part, that if this can be attained, the result will be a restoration of confidence be- tween the nations of the world and that thus the best preparation will be made for the vital decisions which the monetary and economic conference will be called upon to tuke."
Repiles from the Governments In the British Dominions have al- ao been delivered to the President.
