CONTRACT BRIDGE
By W. E. McKenney
When in it safe to make a pen- alty double? I don't believe It pays to do no' unless you have more than one way of defeating the contract.
For example, if the declarer bids. for six odd and it looks na though you have two trump trieks, I don't believe that makes a safe double. You should have another possible | trick in your hand.
in other words, don't double a contract unless you feel that you can set the dedarer two tricks- then if you do lose one of the | tricks you are counting on, you are sure to set the contruct. There is so such thing as a free double.
However, don't become dis- couraged it the declarer oc- casionally makes a contract which you have doubled, because if you always set the declarer when you double, you are not doubling Cre- quently enough. Take for instance The following hand-West cannot be severely criticised for doubling the contract of six hearts, yet Mrn," H. D. Stabl, the former national women's champion, af Pittsburgh. Pa.. made six hearts doubled.
The Bidding
Mrs. Stahl in the South opened with one heart. North put in a jump overeal of three clubs witch is not only a rame-demand bid,

but is also a mild stam invitation. Mrs. Stahl replied with three hearts,
North felt that the only thing that her partner could have to jus- tify a re-bid in hearts was the nee of spades and a strong five or six- eard heart auit. North's next bid, therefore, was six hearts, which West doubled,
The Play
West's opening lead was the ten of clubs, which was won in dummy with the ace The ace of hearts was played and then a small spade; which the declarer won with the jack.
The king of hearts was then cashed, a small club being discard- ed from dummy, and East showed out, leaving West with the jack. Mrs. nine and eight of hearts. Stahl still had the queen, tett, six and five of hearts, and it looked as though she might have to lose two heart tricks.

However, she next played her jack of diamonds, West covered and the trick was won with dum-Press my's ace. The queen of diamonds was then played and a small dia- mond led, Mrs. Stahl trumping with the five of hearts.
The six of clubs was played and won in dummy with the king. Dummy's king of spades was cash- ed and a small spade led-declarer winning with the nee.
Mrs. Stuhl then fed the six of hearts, which West was forced to win with the eight. West then had to lend into Mrs. Stahl's ten- ace position, and Mrs. Stahl had successfully made her contract of six odd by applying an end play.
