ANXIOUS WAITING FOR HITLER STATEMENT

BRITISH POLICY

(SPECIAL TO "TELEGRAPH”)

(by Telegraph: Copyright, Telegraphic Messages Ordinance, 1891. Reecived, May 16, 12,26 a.m.)

PARIS, MAY 15.

NO FURTHER ÁTTEMPT IS BEING MADE TO HIDE THE FACT THAT THE SITUATION IN EUROPE HOLDS MENACING POSSIBILITIES.

Both Britain and France are likely to make important declarations of policy on Thursday, after Herr Hitler's speech in the Reichstag on Wednesday on Germany's aims.

Reuter is authoritatively informed that Mr. Norman Davis, the American unofficial ambassador, who is fully acquainted with the British standpaint, has discussed with M. Paul-Boncour, the French Foreign Minister, the lines of common policy between Paris, London and Washington.

This, it is said, should not he interpreted as a plan for united action against Germany, as there is the greatest anxiety to build a bridge, but the situation is fraught with menacing possibilities and therefore the other powers are necessarily on the defensive.-Reuter.

DISCUSSION IN THE COMMONS

Vitally Important Statement to be

Made by President

Washington, May 15.

A declaration of United States foreign policy of extreme importance in the present political crisis, is being made by President Roosevelt to-morrow.

President Roosevelt hopes thereby to mobilise workl opinion in time possibly to offset Hitler's Reichstag speech on Wednesday and to save the Disarmament Conference, and incidentally, therefore, smooth the path for the World Econo- mie Conference.

The declaration, it is believed, will comprehend a doctrine for European relations something like the Monroe Doctrine. It is also expected that President Roosevelt will assert the readiness of the United States to consult other nations when war threatens and join in proper safeguards,

It is known that he will urge the realistic disarmament contained in the MacDonald Plan.-Reuter.
