CINEMA SCREENINGS.

NOTES SUPPLIED BY THE THEATRES.

"Film critics make much of the contrast between the American and | European serean", says Harry Lach- man, directer of "Face in the Sky", the Fox film coming to-morrow to the | King's Theatre.

"American practice, depends more on the use of terne, well-written dialogue to tell the story, relegating the camera le a lens important role, while In Europe the picturo-makers emphasize the enmern na the prin- cipal narrator. In other words, the American method is based on that of the singe to a great extent, while abroad they follow the technique of the silent picture.

"This difference, however, is not na vital as the critics make it out to be. After all, the story in the principal thing, and if it is well told, the exact method used in the telling

a minor matter",

asic

In "Face in the Sky", his first American production, the directer combines a purely American story theme with the so-called European treatment of presenting the narrative largely by means of the camera. Spencer Tracy, Marian Nixon Stuart Erwin have the leading roles in the production, a whimsical ro- mance of a travelling artist and country girl. Myles Conolly wrote the original story, with Humphrey Pearson turning out the rereen play and William Collier, Sr. handling the dialogue direction. Surah Fadden und Sam Hardy hend the supporting cast. Engrossing Film

Mystery, a bizarrë trick and one of the most gripping pieces of character portrayal in years unite in making a vivid drama of "Payment Deferred," commencing to-morrow at the Queen's Theatre. Charles Laugh- ton, whose performance in this play on the stage in London and Now York was hailed as one of the most artistic characterizations of the de- cade, plays the same role in the pic-

ture.

| Orphan Aanie". Now Annie, with her nable dog Sandy, and Little Mickey, and all the rest of Harold Gray's cbarneters, have come to life on the talking sereen at the Central Theatre te-Borraw.

"Little Orphan Annie", with Mitzi Green in the title role, features olso that fine veteran May alyson. It is Truthful, straightforward, gripping cemedy-drain with a bright strain of optimism all the way through. The story, essentially una, dents with the heroic attempts of one little orp han to cure for another-to make him

to be good boy, to find line a good

home.

As Little Orphan Annie. Mitzi Green unkes her bow as an actress of aval dramatic talent. There is little of the minie In her work, no shained reaching after effects de- pendent upon her ability to ape

merians of Chevalier or one of the Two Black Crown. Here Mitzi plays an emotional part. The sercen play was written by Wanda Tuchock and Tom MeNamara, two very able craftsmen, fram the famous contie strip by Harold Gray.

to

As far as the story is concerned, "Evenings for Sale," is a tenderly romantic idyll which evolves in general from the same Ickground as "The Merry Widow," "The Student Prince" and other stories of central Europe. The film in another example of the new technique of using music cover transition in the action--a technique which was employed 20 successfully in "Love Me Tonight" and This is the Night." An old wallz by Johann Strauss, the younger, ser- ves in the nature of a theme song, and this, along with especially written muxic, provides both baékground and action for the story:
