CONTRACT BRIDGE

By W. E. McKenney

Do the good players, who are successful in winning champion- ahlpa, always strictly adhere to the system they are playing? I think the answer given by Willard S. Karn of New York,.one of the five outstanding bridge players of the world, to this question is worth repeating.

Ho said, "Does a good football team play mechanical football?" He further asked; "When the sig nale are given for a certain play, suddenly the ball-caftler and realizes that the defence has the hole plugged, but scés another opening on the other side of the field-isn't it good, football for him to dodge through this weak spot and gain five or ten yards?"

Aud so, ho nays, it is in con- traet. Bid with your partner, but at times, when you are opening, have the courage to do the unu sual.

He gives the following hand which he played recently in New York tournament example.

Mr. Karn sat in the North is. partner in the South was the deal er and passed. West bid one club. Mr. Karn knew that the West player in this particular hand did nit open on weak first or second hand bida. With a pass from his partner, ho reasoned that possi- bly top score on the board would be no tramp, therefore he wished to stop a ne trump contract.

Both sides were vulnerable, and generally to overcall, when vul- nerable, you are required to hold about two a five-card sult and and one-half high card tricks. Here he was with only one and one-half tricks and a four-card biddable auit.

It is true he might be subject- ed to severe penalty to overcall, but as he could overcall the West hand with a bid of only one, and his hand was 80 weak, he put in a bid of one spade. If dou- Bled, he could get out in hearts.

Eust bid two diamonds-this is

strength-showing bid as it is n

new suit, and made freely over an cail. South passed adversary's and West bid three no trump. Mr. Karn then passed. East showed a powerful hund by hidding five diamonds, but Mr. Kara's bid of ene spade vulnerable had done its damage.

no

West, who had bid three trump on his four small spades, was now afraid of losing at least two spade tricks and let the con- tract die at five diamonds. of course, the small alam was. easily made.

It was surprising to note, after looking over the scores of the 14 tables which played the same tray. that not another vulnerable North player in the room put in the overcall of one spade.

Mr Karo, in explaining the land later, said he realized that West was not going to play the ham in clubs-that they were go- ing to find a better declaration-- and, in his opinion, he thought no trump would give them top on the board.

If he could get in a cheap lend- directing bid, or a bid that might prevent them from arriving at a no trump contract, he would re- ceive a good score on the board. At every other table in the room amali alarm was arrived at In either no trump or diamonds.

If the opponents had doubled one spade, Mr. Karn would have bid two hearts, which would also have been doubled, but the hand can be played so an to go. down
