The Bidding South passed. West holding two and one-half tricks and a Įbiddable club sult, opened the Youth contracting with one club. doubled. Under the writer's rys- double tem of contract, bidding. shows at least three and one-half tricka. Enat passed and South took out with diamonds. Wert passed and North boldly jumped to three No Trump.
The Play
East has the openlug lead. Not having a strong suit of his own to establish, he opened the top of his partner's suit, the seven of clubs. West played the three spot to dlx- courage the club lead and North, the declarer, won the trick with the ten.
If the declarer could find the King of hearts in the West hund and the hearts were to break, he could go game. With an "nfortu- nate distribution the hearts may le wrong, therefore he should immediately try to establish dum- my's long diamond suit by leading | the nine spot, and when Enst playa the seven, the Ave is played from dummy and West wins the trick with the king.
West can see that the declarer hits is endeavoring to establish diamonds and that the queen of spades may act as an entry to dummy. He therefore abandons the club suit and shifts to a spade, but the declarer wins the trick with the nce and leads the four of diamonds. East plays the jack, declarer plays the queen from dummy, and West refuses to win the trick, trying to block off the diamond suit. The declarer should immediately return the ten of diamonds to establish this suit. West wins with the ace and East discards the six of hearts. West returns the three of spades which the declarer now allows to ride to dummy's queen East having played the ten. The two good Alamonds are eashed from dum- my, West discarding a spade and declarer the five of a club, the hearts and jack of hearts, Enst diacarding two clubs.
