REPLY TO AN M.P. DEPUTATION

An assurance that the Govern ment is giving anxious attention to the question of State assistance to the able-bodied unemployed and of removing transitional benefit anomalies, was given by Sir Henry Beiterton, the Minister of Labour, to a deputation of M.P.s represent- Ing the distressed arena,›

The deputation arged that the State should maintain all able bodied unemployed under the age of 65, that present anomalies in the scale of transitional benefit as between one area and another should be abolished, and that the scale should be uniform with the addition of rant and cost of living; the allowances appropriate to locality.

Sir Nicholas Grattan Dayle, the spokesman, explained that there was a misunderstanding about the Prime Minister's reply to the de putation. It was not true that the : Prime Minister bnd declined bo sce the deputation. He had asked that in the first place the TCS- ponsible Ministers should hear th views of the members and report to the Prime Minister fully. The matter would then receive his con- sideration.

It is understood that Sir Robert Aske and other speakers impressed on the Minister of Labour the urgency of dealing with the grow-i ing burden of local rates.

Sir Henry Betterion replied that while he agreed that the growth of rates was becoming a burden it must not be forgotten tha! national taxation had grown dur- int the last five or six years front £12,000,000 to nearly £70,000 000 in respect of unemployment resef. During the same period there ha been an actual decline, by a small percentage, of rates raised for the same purpose.

Sir E. on Young, the Minis- ter of Health, asked the deputation:
