Vory many years ago, when the Late King Edward VII, was Prince of Wales and serving with the Royal Navy on the Mediterranean Station, our Mr. C. II. Bernard had the honour of serving closely with His Royal Highness,
Imminent retirement from the Servlex and a capacity for business suggested to Mr. C. II, Bernard the necessity for reviewing the prospects, which finally resulted in the blue skies and the happy comradeably of the Navy being left behind in the Mediterranean.
That Mr. Bernard was eminently successful in business is emphasised by the fact that within a Low months he had secured-important-Naval contracts, and further, had built up such a specialised businear, was commanded to appear at Buckingham Palace for the purpose of receiv In order for the Royal Household. Thus for many years the House of Bernard had the signal privilege of being the exclusivo tailors to H.R.H. The Prince of Wales, II.R.II. The Duke of York, IL.R.If, the Duke of Gloucenter, and to Princess Mary Viscountess Lascolles,
In April 1902, Mr. C. H. Bernard was granted the Royal Warrant of Appointment, and the insan of the "Court Circular" for that manth gave considerable space in outlining Mr. C. H. Bernard's success, and suggesting that he was persona gratu at Cour!.
We then received the honour of providing the first uniforms for Their Royal Highnesses, und to- day we still have the privilege of serving Members of the Royal Household.

SURPRISE IN REPORT OF COMMITTEE
The report of the Committee ap
of pointed to consider the pay police sergeants and constables who have joined the police forces in England, Wales, and Scotland since September 30. 1931, has been issuct.
If the recommendations are ap proved, constables will receive mora on joining than is the caso nt present, but will have to sorve longer to obtain the maximum pay, which remains unaltered,

The rate then rises In incro- ments of 2s. 6d. up to seven years, and then in increments of 29. up
to the maximum pay of 90s, after twelve years.
ed.
Sergeants' pay remains unofter.
INCREASED WORK,
The Committee endorse the re- port of the Desborough Com- mittee in 1919 that police work as a profession should be raised per- manently:
"This was a wise intention," it states, "and the attraction of re- cruits of a higher standard of alucation, intelligence, and social atanding is not less desirable than it was in 1919."
"The work and responsibilities of the police have further in- creased since 1919 as a result of the greater complexity of present- day, life; and that in particular cases, notably that of the Road Traffic Act, the passing of new legislation has brought about a material increase.
"Another change which hus takes place," states the report, "Is in the class of persons with whom the police have to deal. Bofore 1919, or at least before the war, their day-to-day work was withi the criminal class, and the offence which bulked largest was that of drunkenness.
"But while drunkenness has ceased to occupy a major part in the work of the police," it adds, the vast increase in motor trafic has brought them into contact with all sections of the com- unity; and wherens before 1919 the constable had seldom to persons exercise authority over
af n different social order from his own, that is now a common hi- eldent of his daily duty."

LONG WALK
WATER MISTAKEN FOR PETROL
Thieves, who stole a motor-car
at Oxford, drove it to a lonely spot on the Southampton Portsmouth Hond, when the petrol supply be- came exhausted.
The car was found abandoned with the lights at burning, hy an Automobile Association patrol
man.
At each A.A. patrol box two cana are kept, one containing petrol and the other water. The petrol can is removed at night..

The thieves, running short petrol, broke into two boxes King's Corner and at Wickham. but the cans they took contained water, with which they led the tank.
Presumably they then had a long walk.
