CINEMA SCREENINGS.
NOTES SUPPLIED BY THE THEATRES,
To the world Greta Garbo may be n figure of mystery, a glamorous per monality they know only on the screen. But to Director George Fitzmaurice, aho is a timid young woman, greatly capacity gifted, with an enormous for work.
Fitzmaurice, who directed Greta Garbo in "Mata Hari," and again in "As You Desire Me," her new star- ring vehicle new playing at the
declares Queen's Theatre,
Garbo's energy is exhaustless when she is Bo fore the camera.
"In all my experience," he said, "I have never seen an actress so com pletely submerged in the role she is playing. She is like a human dynamo, ahe constantly building energy as works. No scene is too difficult; no unusual camera angle too complicated for her patience.
"Me And My Gal"
While nine out of ten actreasca pre compelled to fight for succesa Joan Bennett attained it with little effort. This may be accounted for to some degree by the fact that she inherited her famous father, talent from Richard Bennett, and her charming mother, Adrienne Morrison. Mies Bennett made her
on the New her father in "Jarnegan debut with York stage and, though she was without previous experience, she won wide acclaim for her first performance on "Bulldog Drummond, opposite Ronald Colman. Offers of contracts from several studios were made to Miss Bennett and she decided to ac cept the one proffered by Fox Filma. "Me And My Gal' which is at the King's Theatre is an exciting comedy, played against a New York background, depicting the adventures of a young detective whe, while par- aving a band of crooks, meets and falls in love with the sister-in-law of a girl who becomes involved in a bank robbery.
"Handle With Care"
What is it that makes James Dunn so popular in motion pleturca?
Tike
To those who know him, tho answer is easy. It is his vital spark of per- sonality, that elusive something that ankes everybody in general and won- en in particular,
him. Dunn wonders why it was never discovered when he was on the stage in various stack companies before, he first went into us. He cannot understand that stage personality and screen per sonality are so much at variance. On the stage his success was passive, but when he reached the screen he was A sensation.
Dunn made his motion picture debut in the unforgettable "Bad Girl" with Sally Eilers, and who does not recall that scene in the doctor's office where Dunn bega the great medical man to attend his wife? That picture made Dunn a star, and at the
same time did a great deal to establish Mins Eilers. Donn's next pictures Was "Sob Sister" and following this he played the featured masculine roles in Over The Hill", "Dance Team" and "Society Girl". Then Fox Films discovered a youthful and charming girl on the New York stage and signed her
to a contract. She is Boots Mallory who makes her screen debut with Dunn in "Handle With Care", a David Butler production in which El Brendel, shares honours with Dunn and Miss Mallory,
In this picture, Dunn is again said to enjoy a role tailored to his mea- sure. He appears on a youthful na sistant district attorney who falls in love with a girl who makes a fight for two little motherless boys left to her care by a sister.
Quite naturally El Brendel, in his role of an innocent Swede who tenekes music; furnishes most of the comedy. Buster Phelps and George Ernest, a pair of now kid actors, play impor- tant roles, while others in the cast are Victor Jury, Frank O'Conner, Pat Hartigan and Arthur Vinton.
Butler not only directed the picture but wrote the story from which the screen piny was adapted by Frank Craven, distinguished playwright and actor, and Sami Mintz, scenarist.
"Handle With Care", starts an en- gagement on Thursday at the King's Theatre.
"The Mummy" The Mummy" is having its final run at the Central Theatre to-day, with Karloff In the starring role. The mummy dead 3000 years--yet alive to-day. Tho High Priest of a tim yesterday roaming a modern city In search of the vestal virgin he loved wore young! when the pyramids Finding her in the person of a beaufi- ful society girl, fighting for her with all the strange power of a forgotten selence. It's unusually thrilling
"Carnival Boat"..
Bill Boyd, popular athletle star has "Carnival one of his beat roles in Boat" which will be showing at the Central Thentro on Thursday.
Thi to the first romance of the logging camps since sound was com- bined with "motion" pictures. Somo of the most beautiful mountain and timberland soonery over, caught by the caniera is the background. It was filmed in the High Sierras of Cali formin. Boyd plays young lumbor man who fails to live up to the hopes of his father, a voteran of the tim- herlands. His love for a show-boat girl, played by Ginger Bogers, takes his mind off his duties in the logging camp. His father's attempt to make his chip off the old block got down to serious business causos a rift be- tween them. When the father works over-zealously to cover-up his son's weakness and deliver their quota of timber, he nearly loses his life pilot- ing a timber train down the mountain, But Bill seen the runaway train, risks his life to reach it, and 'saves his fa- ther. The girl proves her worth and her love for B}{ in a novel way for i happy ending..
