The opening three bid is a de- finite attempt to locate these carda in partner's hand and nake him to give specific Information« about his acea and kings, if any. Some players have felt that a bid of this type has little valua bo- cause it occurs so seldom How- ever, when such a hand does arise, the original three bid in the surest way to obtain the necessary infor mation. A good example of this bid occurred in this den).

The Bidding

South was the dealer, and of course passed. West hold a very powerful hand which contained only one loser in hearts, one in diamonds, one in clubs, with the additional possibility of losing. the queen of clubs,

With finessing positions in both clubs and hearts, West had the right to figure that only should lose and therefore his hand

one

fully justifies an original three bid.

North passed and East realized that his partner wanted definite information regarding the posi- tion of an ace or the king of

trump. Holding noithor-the high king nor any, ace-East made the conventional response of three no trump.

This bid would be made regard. less of heart support or any other strength that East might bold. It simply denied holding any of the key cards for which West was

searching.

West was not surprised at the three no trump response-in fact it was exactly what he expected, for the only aco East could possib ly hold would be the spade ace and that would be of no assistance.

He now knew definitely thai East did mot hold the king of hearts, for otherwise the response would have been four heurin. The next card which West wanted to locate was the king of clubs, so he specifically asked for that card by a bid of four cluba.

This was not to be taken us a desire to play the hand at clubs because the original three bid definitely showed that the hand must be played at hearts. A hand having an option between two sults or between a sult and no trump would be opened with a two bid rather than a three bid, provided, of course, the necessary strength were present.

East know that West was asking for the king of clubs and evidently desired to locate that card for a possible siam bid, therefore East bid five clubs and that was all tho encouragement. West needed to carry the contract to six hearts,

If East had not held the king of clubs he would have signed of with a bid of four hearts and tha: would have been the final con- tract.

The Play

The play of the hand offers no problem at all. The heart fincase lost, but the combined hands con- tain no other losers.

Hands which are opened with-a forcing three bid seldom present much problem in play, for if the bidding is properly handled it will locate every important card in the deck. The partners will know definitely whether the cards they require are held by themselves or by their opponentë.

This Is the one great value of the three bid, for it eliminatea practically all hazards from gamo and slam declarations when the distribution of the cards is such that an opening three bid can ba made.
