BEAUTY IN
THE WORLD OF WOMEN
BUSINESS
Good Look An Asset.
"Goort looks, after all, are a girl's' best ansot, even to-day. In business and privato fo they help her to Huccean," said a young London girl recently, after she had been award-
ed £300 for a facial disfigurement; caused by a motor accident.
In these days, when most girls are good to look at, if they are not. good-looking, it is difficult to say how far their look have made or will made for success in business. Looks are certainly an asset, and, other things beings equal, they help to tip the scale in a girl's favour, advancement especially where rests on some man's preference.
I know an office where a vacancy arose for a superintendent of ty pists. Of the two girls on the staff who were in the running for the Job, one was pretty and the other plain. Now the plain girl was more "brainy" than her rival, and merits the other girls expected her to succeed. But the choice lay' with a man: and the pretty girl secured the appointment.
on
of business, In certain kinds beauty is almost essential to suc cess. The proprietess of a beauty parlour, for instance, should be a shining example of the efficacy of her own treatment, and an assist- ant in a fashionable florists should vle in bloom with the flowers she sells. But women in all walks of business life whose dutics bring them into frequent contact with client or customer find that beauty Is a lure that few can withstand, especially when it is alied with that, grace, and good manners.
It is because all these qualities are seldom found in combination in the individual that there are not more women at the helm of our) great industrial undertakings. Men resent the merely "clever" woman, and they harbour no love for the woman with "push." They may be attracted by a pretty wom- an; but to ono possessed of brains, beauty, and charm they will show deference and respect.
But it is continued effort that brings success. Although a pretty girl may hold sway now and again on the strength of her looks, lasting success comes only to those who
can build a career for themselves with fade and afford little support In middleage; character built on a stronger and surer foundation will then come proudly into its own.-

I saw Jean Harlow playing golf with Clarke Guble and Jean was wearing a blue and white striped silk dress with a full pleated skirt and sleeveless blouse.
Dona Roberts and Dick Powell were at the beach recently. Donna wore gray slacks, red and gray beach sandals and a red turtle-neck sweater which was backless.
