Yesterday nk the Kowloon Magistracy, there was a further de- velopment in the ease against Mark William Hallums, master of the Chinese Maritime Customs launch, Kwan Lal, which had an armed encounter with a sailing junk in Junk Bay on April 1, resulting in the death of Ni Koo, a three-year- old girl.
On Wednesday afternoon, |special jury consisting of Messrs. C. C. Champkin (foreman), E. Cock and D. E, Clark. found that the circumstances of the case Justified #1 verdict of man- Inughter against the master of the Customa launch and the Coroner (Mr. H. R. Buiters) committed Mr. Hallums to prison pending his trinl.
Arising out of the verdict re- turned by the jury, Mr. Hailums again appeared of the Kowloon Magistracy yesterday afternoon. Mr. J. A. Fraser, Assistant At- torney General, profferred fi charge of manslaughter against Mr. Hallum who was represented by Mr. W. A. Mackinlay.
In profferring the charge, Mr. Fraser referred to the Coroner's Abolition Ordinance. He stated that Mr. Ifalluns had been brought from the prison to the Court under Judge's order, for the purpose of making his defence to the present charge and that he had no objee- tion to a substantial tail of, say, $1,000.

I
Mr. Buttera:-I ibink it would
most
that be
improper should be the Magistrale before whom the Lower Court procedure is taken against Mr. Hallume in view of the fact that I, as Coroit- er, have heard the evidence and have heard the verdict of a special jury.
Mr. Fraser: It would be en- be renient if the hearing could held in Kowloon. I known of no objection to your Worship tuking the proceedings.
Mr. Butters: As far as I can see, I am being asked to duplicate what I did on Wednesday, after- noon. I would prefer the case to be taken by another Magistrate.
Mr.
Worship, Fraser: Your there is only one Magistrate in Kowloon.
Mr. Butters: But, it doesn't need to be me. 1. have most la- cided objections to hearing this case:
Mr. Mackinlay: The Commis- aloner of the Chinese Maritime Customs will stand security for for reason the ball. 1 sec no duplicating the enquiry and it will only cause Mr. Hallums un- necessary expense. While we are tu your Worship's hands, we op- pose this application for the en- quiry to be re-heard.
Mr. Butters: I am being
なぜー
quested to take part in a duplicate
of the first enquiry.
Mr. Mackinlay: With regard to the buil, the Commissioner of Mr. Chinese Maritime Customs.
E. N. Ensor, is prepared to enter into a bond.
I
Mir. Butters: am granting ball on the Coroner's enquiry and this charge.
Mr. Hallume was thon admitted to bail of $1,000 and the case was formally remanded for a week.
