CONTRACT

BRIDGE. -

By W. E. McKenney, To-day's hand illustrates a fine point of bidding which is Boldom mentioned by bridge writers and which is totaly unknown to players of moderate skill. It is sometimes necessary to manipulate the bld. ding so that the proper partner will become the declaror..

A contract which would be im- posible for one partner to make night become vory ensy if played from the other side of the table, and the true expert will consider the probable opening lead and the location of the opposing strength before deciding wihch member of his side should play the hand,

This deal presented a difficult bid- ding problem to the East and West players. In most cases the West player tried to make either three no trump, four hearts, or five dia- monds, but all of these contracts. fact due to the were defeated, that North opened a spade through East's queen, and after the first trick the declarer was defenseless In that suit.

The Bidding

South dealt and opened with one spade, which was the only bid made by his side. West doubled and East bid two clubs. His hand- probably justifled a three-club bid, but he felt sure that his partner, would not pass and he was anxious

She bid two diamonds and now Eust bid two. no trump. He reason- ed that his partner.probably had & stopper in spades and if not, she would surely take him back to clubs; for his failure to bid 110 trump on the first round indicated that he did not have the spades Bolidly stopped. His queen spades might be very valuable if led up to by South but would be worthles if North were the opening leader.

Furthermore South, having made an opening bid, probably held all the outstanding strength and it was extremely doubtful if North would over be in the lead at all if East became the declarer.

West bid three no trump which became the final contract.

The Play

South's logical opening was the seven of spades which Enat took In his own hand with the queen, He then led a small diamond which South won with the ace and cleared the spade suit by knocking out dum- With the diamond sult my's nee. now established Enst decided to play for the heart suit and when the jack of hearts dropped on the second round, he wa ible to make four hearts, five diamonds and two spades, thus making his contract with two overtricks.

LOVE OR MONEY?

(Continued from Page 3.)

still closed about Mona's, "I hung around the subway, and the elo- vated, hoping to waylay you on the way back from work. 'Suro she rides home in the bosa' car,'. Pat, the newaig, told me just to tenso me. It's good to see you, Monal Aren't you the early bird though 7"

"You are up early yourself Steve,"

He leaned down toward her car, regarded it admiringly, then whis pered with mock secrecy.

a

"I'm not not up this early. I'm up this Into! Haven't been to bed yet With the gesture of detective flushing his badge, Stevo pulled back his topcont. He was wearing evening attire which to Mona's practiced eye spelled perfection.

Well, high life--or whatever the clothes implied-was certainly be- coming to Steve. Whatever had brought it about sat easily on his cunscience, too. Never had sho. seen him so sure of himself, so worldly wise. If Steve had cou- Horted with crooks they must cer- tainly be gentlemen.

"I'll take you down to your of- fice," Steve Auggested after the first excitement of their meeting disappeared.

Mona climbed into the seat and Steve Jumping in beside her, Ho atarted the car with a low, almost imperceptible purr..

"Where have you been, Steve?" she asked without parley as they threaded the clevated posts on weren't- Third avenue. "You you weren't-"

"In jail?" He turned and re- anrded her proДle seriously. "No! And nothing like it, Min! You know-well, maybe I was mixed, up in something but I fooled 'em".

"Fooled who? The cops?" "Harder than that, Min. I fool- ed the gang." Ho paused as if about to take her into his con- fidence, then abruptly decided otherwise,

*

*

*

Steve laid a hand over her small gloved one and tightened bis grasp as he continued,

"You mustn't worry about me. You've heard a lot of lies about me since I've been gone. Maybe some of 'em were true! Every thing I've got, Min, today ja straight money. I've gone straight -did it before I really went crooked! Lot's of guys who are in on rackets would like to pull out but they can't. Maybe I couldn't but I did! They were Bore at me for a while but it all blew over."

Min,

"They can't?” "Can't what? Get me? they can get anyone, as far as that goes. Their bullets don't care who they bump off. But the chances are they won't go after me. They aren't afraid I'll spill to the cops. It was all long ago and plenty! I watched the papers. And I didn't have very much on them, anyhow. They saw to that."

"You talk like a movie."

"Then tot's talk about some- thing else." There was a pause and Mona noticed that the greet- Ing of the traffé policeman at the intersection of Third and the Bowery as they passed was warm and hearty. She saw admiration for Steve's enr in the policeman's face.

"It's a pretty car, all right,” she ventured.
