LOCAL TRANSPORT SERVICE
CHINA PROVIDENT
FACILITIES
The many advantages of me chanical transport are possibly too widely realised to be ap preciated, and yet, in many res pects, Hongkong has been some. what slow in moving with the times. There is a. peculiar non-l chalance which merely tolerates "ola custom" with occasional brenks from the obsoleta. Thus it. has been although motor vehicles | have crowded our roads for years now, no adequate provision was made for modern. "cross-harbour transportation until de advent of the vehicular ferries in the year 1933.
The transportation of merchan diso has largely been left to the old junk and coolie-truck systems, relics of centuries long past, with all the Increased risks arising from unnecessary handling and un- secured labour.
510
The organisation therefore of a modern transportation service for goods employing the latest types of British-made motor lorries is to be welcomed as a sign of progress, thanks to the Chinn Provident Loan & Mortgage Co., Ltd.
Owning and operating extensive godowns, it is, of course, the logies) extension of the Company's busin- ess, but, at the same time, such an excellent service is a valuable ad- dition to th Colony's commercial"] facilities.
The new service is all the more Important when considered in. con- junction with the vehicular ferries, It now being possible to take de- livery of goods front points in Kow- loon, load them on to a lorry, and unload at the actual destination in the island of Hongkong. Thus j maximum security in transit pro- vided, while the important factor of cost is not neglected,
Motor
The China Provident Transport Service is also proving its worth in the matter of moving furniture and baggage, and the extremely efficient organisation, and supervision reflect the greatest credit on the Company concerned.
Although a recent development and only nine months' old, the
service is already in much demand. and, with the joint facilities of storage, it is safe to predict that the enterprise will reap the reward of success as it becomes more firmly established.
