There is no question but that it is absolutely necessary to know how to bid the hands correctly at contract, but I am afriad that too many people are forgetting that the play of the hand is equally im- portant.

I was rather shocked lately to notice the number of people who do not know how to employ the hold-up at no trump. It is one of the first and most important plays every bridge player should know. This and the next two articles will be devoted to explaining this particular play.

South, having no weak auit and a tenace position in three suits, should open the contracting with one no trump. West will pass.

North has a five-card suit and a side ace and king. However, I would not show this club suit in this case, as I believe it better for North to jump right into three no trump, which shows strength "but conceals the long suit.

When you hold a suit as strong as this after partner's original no trump you may be practically certain that it is partner's weak suit and if you bid it, he will. again bid no trump. By conceal- ing the suit you will find that your opponents will occasionally open that particular suit.
