CONTRACT KEEP UPKEEP DOWN

BRIDGE

By W. E. McKenney Naturally any foreing bid is constructive. However, in the constructive one over one system of contract bidding it often be comes necessary to insert a forcing bid, as a simple constructive bid' might not convey the full informa tion regarding the hand or get the proper response from partner.

Let us take up some of the fore- ing responses. Original bidder opens with one heart. Partner. bids three hearts.

A bid of two hearts would be a sign-off bid. Therefore, the bid of three hearts is a constructive bid, and as it is a jump bid it is in addition forcing. Adly jump bid in this system of Sidding is a forc- ing bid, if

has not been game reached. *

Now supposing the original bid- der opens with one heart and the partner jumps to four hearts.. Let us take the natural meaning from this response.

He has not bid two hearts. which would be a sign-off bid. He has not bid three, which is a forg ing bid, has jumped to four. Therefore this jump to four can be nothing other than an assurance that it is perfectly safe to play the hand at four hearts, and the bid

WORLD'S GREATEST TRAVEL becomes a mild slam try.

In other words, in this system of bidding when we find two hands that fit, especially when they fit with a major suit, we do not be- lieve that it pays to show a second suit, as it may give away somet | strength.".

Let us say that you hold five" cluba to the ace, king, queen. Partner opens with one heart.

acc.

il

You hold four hearts to the queen, jack, and in addition let us say" side

is indeed This tremendous hand and many playerà would force over one heart by bidding three clubs.

'However, this bid of three clubs might he just what your opponents are looking for. It might tell them how property to attack the hand.

You are not going to play the hand in clubs, since both you and your partner have hearts. Why not jump the contract directly to four hearts, stating to partner that there is no question but that you

tion if he has more than he orig- can make four hearts, and in addi-

inally advertised, you think there

is a possibility of making a slam? Now I will take another example. The original bidder

4

opens with one heart partner re- sponds with two no trump. The response of one na trump would be a sign off bid. Partner has not elected to make a sign-off bid, but has jumped to twe no trump.

Therefore, this is constructive, and as it is a jump bid, it is fore- ing. This bid should not be made, however, unless you hold a high honour in partner's suit-that is the ace, king or queen-or unless you have a great deal of, side reserve strength and only wish to use partner's heart suit or heart bid as a stopper in that suit,, winning the majority of tricks in your own side suits.

Now supposing that you were to jump to three no trump over a bid jof one heart. Here again we find the slam try. In other words, you įstate; “I am not seeking addition- al information regarding your hand but I am endeavouring to convey to you at once that I have an exceptionally powerful. hand and am willing to try for a slam.

And here is one more example. Supposing the original bidder | opens with one heart. Partner re- sponds with one spade-the fore- ing one over ont.

If the original bidder were now to respond wih two spades, he would be stating that he held four spades and also that he had no re- serve strength over that adver- tised by his original bid. If he were to jump to three spades this would be a constructive forcing bid. However, supposing he were to jump to four, spades, here again we find the slam try.

In this series of articles on can- structive bidding I hope I have im- pressed upon my readers the fact that to jump to game is in no way considered a sign-off bid in the constructive one over one system of bidding. On the contrary, fre- quently it is a slam invitation.

GREAT BRITAIN'S SOLID POSITION

London, Mar. 2

An optimistic view of the out- look was taken by the Chancellor of the Exchequer. Mr. Neville Chamberlain last night, when he appealed for confidence in the National Government to enable it to complete its task.

"Our credit system has been so fully restored", he said, "that to- day we are almost embarrassed by the amount of money that is com- ing into London from other coun- tries, brought here by people who feel that this a safer place than that from which it came. From having slipped back to the position of third exporting coun- try of the world, we have once again regained, our position as first exporting country."

Over 200 new Tactories had been catablished with foreign capital, he said. The Government had had invitations from something like 20 foreign countries to begin negotiations with them for new commercial treaties. Agriculture was being re-organised from top to bottom. Farmers at present had great hopes and greater con- fidence in the future than they had had for many years."

The Indian Problem. Referring to the difficult and delicate problem of instituting a new system of Government in India, he said the Government did not underrate the risks, but with patience, goud-will, prudence and courage, they might be encouraged to believe that they would present- ly see the end of that momentous problem.

A great and beneficent change had in the past week come over the situation in Europe, as a re- sult of British initiative and the visit to Geneva and Rome of the Prime Minister,

"The interest of this country is now, as it always has been, in the preservation of peace" he said "but it is not enough for us to say that.. we ourselves do not intend to go to war. Our interests lie deeper than that. It is our duty, by every effort we can make, by every influence we can exert, to compose the differences and act as media- tors to try to devise methods by which other countries may be de- livered from this great menace."--- British Wireless.
