However, there are times when it becomes necessary to deviate from any rule in contract bridge to obtain the best result, and if a player will stop and think before making a mechanical book bid, he will find the game much more in- teresting.

Here is a hand in which the pair playing it not only "failed to arrive at a grand slam, but failed to bid for the small slam.
