JAPANESE CROSS GREAT WALL AT HSIFENGKOU
INVASION INTO
CHINA PROPER
PRECEDED BY HEAVY
FIGHTING
MANY CASUALTIES
Tokyo, Mar. 20.
After repeated Indications of the probability of such a step, Japanese troops are reported to have crossed the Great Wall into China Proper.
No official intimation has been received to this effect, but according to Press despatches, a Japanese detachment on Saturday crossed the Wall for the pur- pose of relieving the pressure caused by Chinese attacks. The detachment is said to have occupied Sahochiao, fourteen kilometres to the south-west of Haifengkou." HEAVY CASUALTIES
Heavy fighting occurred before the Great Wall was crossed, and it is claimed that the Chinese casualties were heavy.
