L. GOLDMAN LOSES

TO CANNON

IN THREE SETS

SENSATION IN CLUB #CHAMPIONSHIP

(Rv "Veritas") CAPT. P. S. Cannon, a brilliant

strategist, who forced Tani Wal-pui to three sets in the Open Singles, yesterday ac- hieved his outstanding perform-| ance in local tennis when he de feated L. Goldman, in the semi- final of the Hongkong Cricket Club Championship.

Goldman is the holder of the title, and was strongly fancied to retain it this year. He was de cisively beaten 6-0, 6-4, 6-2, the scores reflecting very accurate- ly the measure of superiority which Cannon enjoyed over his opponent.

17

This performance makes him warm favourite for the champion- ships, and judged on yesterday's display he should be able to over- come either R.. H Wild or Denis Hazell, in the final.

BACKHAND ATTACK.

Cannon found his touch from the first delivery, and. developing his usual disconcerting attack from the backhand, swept through Goldman as though beating a club: champion was the easiest thing in the world.

The winner displayed an im- penetrable defence and a greater variety of attacking strokes, 30 that Goldman found no only his own winning strokes discount- rd. but that Cannon had one belter.

Never recovering from a shaky start, Goldman went right to pieces and played well below form.

--|

Capt. P. S. Cannon.

He constantly netted simple re- turns, and his volleying, at no times distinctive, offered, small worry to Cannon.

Cannon made full use of his cleverly disguised backhand drive, the same shot which puzzled Teuf Wai-pul, and the clever manner in which he varied his length and pace time and again deceived Goldman.

THE RESULTS The scores of yesterday's matches follow:-

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP,

Seraf-final:-Capt. Cannon beat L. Goldman 6-0, 6-4, 6-2. HANDICAP SINGLES "A" Semi-final:-Owen Hughes beat Gamble 6-4, 7-5,

Newell beat Wild 6-1, 6-2, ⠀

HANDICAP SINGLES "B." Semi-finnl:-Mousley beat Harbord 6-3, 6-1.

HANDICAP DOUBLES, Waite and Morgan beat *Bishop and Henderson 6-2, 6-1.

JATS BEATEN

LOWER DECK SCORE 6 IN HOCKEY GAME

Playing in friendly hockey match on the Marina ground yes- terday afternoon, the Naval lower Deck team defeated the Jats by 6 to 6. The sailors, however, were somewhat weakened by the absen- ce of Tarr and Rhodes. Abbott (3), McCrae (2) and Richardson notted for the Lower Deck, while the Jata replied through their in- side left (2), centre-forward (2) and inside right. The score at the Interval was two goals all.

The Lower Deck were slightly the superior team, and 'the Jats, while being brilliant, were inclin- ed to become erratic at times dur- ing the game.

'ALTERNATIVES.

Two alternatives will be con- sidered during the meeting in conjunction with the holding of the national net tournament. A proposition to invite tennis player from Hongkong and Shanghai to make the tournament interesting will be eumitted. Another pro- position to conduct the semi-final and final matches in the provinces, in the event that no foreign play- ers will compete will also be dia- cussed.
