In previous articles T. have dis 'cussed some of the difficulties) which beset a defensive bidder sitting over an original bid of one no trump.
A playor considering a de- fensive bid in second position bas a difficult decision to make. From the original bid and his own hold- ing he realizes that his partner and his left hand opponent havej comparatively. little strength be tween them.
If he finds that strength and s favourable distribution in
higi partner's hand a. defensive bid will result in a valuable part score for his side. On the other hand. if the distribution is bad and his opponent holds the missing high cards he in confronted with a heavy penalty.
Good" players dislike to make blind guesses and they have devel- oped an ingenious way to cope with this situation. This la known to some of them as**4] "forcing pass," although that term is slightly inaccurate and pos- sibly "constructive pass" would be better.
