life-bolts within ten minutes of the ship's grounding...
SECOND PANIC
The loan of life" which occurred afterwards was estimated to be. about 50 passengers and approx- imately 20 crew.
The immediate cause of the loss of life, declared witness, was a second panic at 9.30 a.m. when he decided to abandon ship.
The starboard side lifebpata were out of commission owing to the heavy seas breaking over the ship. He began with a few women and children including "his wife and baby son and a few members of the crew who handled the boat.
Mr. J. J. Lincoln felt off while this boat was being launched.. As soon as it was released and came on a level with the main. deck about 40 or 60 male pas.. sengers jumped into it, crushing the women and "children in the bottom of the bont.
At the same time the violent lurching of the vessel dashed the boat against the ship's side, catch- ing the Chief Officer's legs and causing him excruciating pain to the point of fainting.
WIFE AND SON RESCUED. The boat capsized on renching the water, throwing the occupants into the water. Witness' ameh, his personal boy, his steward and a few members of the crew were drowned in this boat,
A few were pulled up the ship's sides by ropes, includ ing his wife and baby Bon, after the No. 2 Russian Anti- Piracy Sergeant and Mr. A. J. B. Jones, passenger from Singapore had gone into the water and tied ropes round the women and children.
The next boat was the No. 4 libe-boat. When this boat got below the anti-piracy grille on the saloon deck, with 30 passengers already in it, about 70 more panic- stricken passengers jumped into it.
After the boat cleared the vessel, it capsized with the ex- cessive numbers in it.

lifeboat was next lowered. in charge of the Second Officer, Mr. Story. As soon as it started off, it was also rushed by about 20 male passengers. After being lowered and released from the ship, these passengers rofused to allow the Second Officer to return for the women and children on board and showed a threatening attitude towarda. the afficer.

the boat also showed a similar threatening diaposition. This boat was rowed away and even- tually picked up by the sa. Anhui which came to the assistance.
The Second Officer returned in conjunction with people from the 6.8. Anhui, and thereafter, from 9.30 a.m. till 5.80 p.m. rescue work was undertaken from the other ship.
CREW TAKES FLIGHT. Without orders, said witness, his sailors including the bo-sun, had left his ship on a raft, this being approximately at 10 a.m. He had no Chinese crew left, ex- cept the carpenter and a few fire-
men.
The Chief Officer, Second En- gineer, and one or two others had bind great difficulty in swinging off
the afterboat.
It was eventually lowered, and about 30 or moro passengera rush- ed into this boat, released it and pulled away. They were seen on the beach about within half an hour of leaving the ship.
In paying a tribute to the rescue. work accomplished by the s.8. An hul, witness' said the boats sent out by the ship resered well over' (Continued on Page 5.)
