Hollywood, Jan.--Hand-knitted things are very modish here for casual daytime wear and sports.

Adrienne Ames wears a white one, with drop-stitches.making a vestee in the buttoned up jacket- jumper, and the skirt all of a rib- bed weave.

It is white, with brown accent- in a fine edging all around the bottom of the jumper, the rutside of the front closing, the edging for the turned.down collar, bow tie and short sleeves. Tiny brown buttons fasten it. Her shoes aré brown and white sports pumps.

Constance Bennet" recently wore a green knitted suit on a rainy day walk and carried a tiny umbrella that folds up so that she can put it in her handbag. She wore a swagger raincoat and small green hat; ***

Others wearing notable knitted things include:

Glenda Farrell at the Beverly Brown Derby in blue slacks, a handknitted white turtie-neck sweater and a red wool coat and scarf.

Gwili Andre in the RKO cafe, wearing a hand-knitted suit of reddish brown and white with a gay scarf of scarlet and a brown felt hat,

Raquel Torres, week ending at Palm Springs, wore a knitted bathing suit in grey. It had no back to speak of and a atrap around her neck beld it in place.

USEFUL TIPS.

New Clothes for Old.

as

Much can be done at home to freshen garments that are a little shabby. First, make them clean as possible. Then take the suit, coat, or skirt and lay it flat on the table. Then soak a piece of the same material as the garment in a little warm water to which ammonia or vinegar has been add- ed in the proportion of one table! spoonful of vinegar (or ammonia) to a pint of water. Rub the gar- ment evenly with the pad, and then dry as much as possible with an other piece of the same material. When nearly dry, press the wrong side over, a cloth, so that; the hot iron never touches the material.

on

This treatment is sufficient to freshen a garment not stained or ahiny from wear. But a paint un collected by your small son, or an ink stain on the woolly office frocit, needs more treatment.

Such stains are always easier

to remove when wet. Paint staina can then be removed by rubbing with turpentine or paraffin. But if the paint has dried in, it

must first be softened by applying equal quantities of turpentine and pure alcohol. Sometimes a grense mark is left after this treatment. If so, rub on a little benzine, and the last traces of the stain will disappear.

And now how to deal with that offensive sline which makes even the best of suits' look shabby, ai- though the cloth itself is in per- fectly good condition.

For materials which have a rough surface, the shiny parts must be rubbed with a little fine emery paper. Rub lightly and evenly until the rough surface of the cloth is restored.
