REVELATION IN

OLD FILM

Remember the

mandments, hailed as the might- iest of mighty productions that established marathon run re- cords everywhere it went about: seven years ago? From the! Hollywood scrap heap, Para mount has resurrected some of the scenes and interpolated them in Forgotten Command- ments, now running "at the King's.

Sandwiched in between the scenes produced by, the latest technique, these old shots will be received with interest by the cinema stud- ent; Hollywood has never given us a better opportunity to compare the cinema of today with that of the old silent days.

How different those old silent i artistes had to be! Even bearing in mind that the spectacular Ten Commandments, demanded flamboy- ant playing, in comparison to the slow and sparse movements of the artistes in the modern story, the theatrical poses of old Theodore Roberts as Moses, of John Roche as Pharoah, and Estelle Taylor, almost verge on the ludicrous. The screen without a voice made pantomime essential, and the extravagant ges- tures and dramatic stance of prin- cipals and supers alike in the old biblical tale, illustrate more than anything, the entirly new technique of acting that the talking films have introduced,

Not that the old pantomime was wrong: the silent films demanded it, and the studious under-acting of Gene Raymond and Sari Marit za in the Russian story would no more have been suited to the Exp tian tale than Theodore Roberts would have fitted in with 1932.

These old sequences have pre- served well, and except for a few feet, it could be easily imagined that they were modern productions, for
