The most abused bid in contract bridge is the game demand fore- ing bid. Partnerships are wreck- ed and games are lost by forcing! bids made by unthinking partners.

Before making a forcing bid. stop and think of the terrific re sponsibility that you place, not on- ly on your partner but on yourself. When you make a game demand bid. you insist that your partner keep the bidding open until thei final declaration is a game-going | contract, and he must do this f his hand is absolutely trickless.

Unfortunately many" players who make game demand forc- ing bida believe that the responsi bility rests entirely with partner. For example, I have seen players Mar. 7 Mer. 9 Mar.15 Mar. 20 open with, let us say, two spades. Apt. 3 Their partner responds with two Mar. 23 Mar. 25

You have no right to pass, after once making an original forcing two bid, or a jump shift response, until a game contraet is reached. Unless your hand meets, the ex- ceptionally strong requirements for forcing bids, play safe and simply make a constructive bid.

If partner has anything, he will respond with a constructive hid and you can safely and surely ar- rive-at-the-best-spot-at-which-the- hand should be played.

Avoid psychics-they ruin part- nerships and lose mere points than they gain. The one over One should only be made with a bidd- able "suft. Don't make a psychic one over one simply to force your partner. Let him know that he can count on a biddable suit from you.

In all my bridge during 1932, I saw but two hands that I felt were strong enough to open with an original two bid, and at that I be-" lieve that my percentage was fair- ly high.

OVER A HUNDRED LIVES BELIEVED LOST.

Shanghai, Feb 21. It is believed that at least 100 lives were lost in an explosion of two huge gasoline vulcanisers in the factory of the Zungdah Rubber Company, in Yangtse- poo, this morning.

-The explosion made a horrible of the two-storeyed sliambles brick, factory, in the interior of which the machinery, burnt wood and the badies of the victims are indis- criminately mixed.

There were two blasts. A fire followed the first, while the Aecond explosion blew out the wall and ceiling of the boller room, precipitating 160 girls from the upper floor into the raging Inferno below.

The casualties are placed at 81- killed, 60 seriously injured, 70 slightly hurt and 10 missing. Many of those injured are in a very critical condition.

The cause of the catastrophe has not been determined. The owner of the,, factory has disap- peared.---Reuter.
