"Of course you will explain that a game contract should not have been reached, and then they will boastfully reply, "Well, we made a game.'

The fact that you make a game does not always justify your bid ding. It is far batter to fail to hid for game on some hands, even though they will produce game in the play, than it is to deceive your partner with your bids. You must also expect to bid some hands for game that will fail to produce game, but on the average. you will gain far more points with confident partnership bidding than with the speculative type of bid-

the turn. It was glorious. Skim. ming like a bit of thistledown, Dancing on a breath of wind.

Across the stage, then back... again, this time progressing slow. ly., Hands crossing in front, head bent just a bit, fect flying. She had it down pati Tum-tum ti-tum! Tum-tum ti-tumi

Now a run up the stage, a few steps around Roscoe, who beamed as she skimmed past him, his baton flicking in approval. She darted toward him, whisked away coquetishly as Bill had taught her.

The saxophone droned a few bars annided and, shielded by Roscoe's bulk, Phil'winked at her. Roscoe nodded smiling. It was all in the act, of course, but Sheila knew he was pleased. Shella, too, was pleased. This was like old times again. Darting, shuffling suddenly the dance was ended.

There was a tornado of ap- plause and Sheila bowed quickly, disappearing. Then, waiting for Roscoe's ned, she reappeared. A bow. Roscoe beckoning her. She fluttered toward him on her toes, smiling, bowing. They advanced. toward the footlights, bowed to the house to each other, her finger tip in his moist, fat palm.

Applause, loud, clamorous, in- sistent. It broke in sudden gusts, now here, now there, and rippled over the entire house. Another tornado as Sheila stood still. Was she going, to dance an encore? Bowing again, a low sweeping." skipping tow. Sheila ran off to change for the next number. But not before she had seen the man in the front row who was still applauding vigorously.

Sheila had seen him! There in correct evening attire, a strange eight in that cozy little neighbour hood house, sat Dick Stanley. He was alone.

PARIS STRIKES

CIVIL SERVICE PROTEST AGAINST CUTS

Paris, Feb. 20. Paris was almost completely cut off from the outer world for two hours this morning, owing to protest strikes.

Telephones and telegraphs were temporarily cut off and transport was stopped for 10 minutes accord- ing to plan but so for there have been brief and spasmodic strikes only in various services and they passed off very orderly.

Having strength in both majors, a hand not strong enough to open with an original one no trump bid (remember that a one no trump bid shows an especially good and) and a hand too strong to pass third hand, it is best to open with the weak minor suit bld, therefore North bid one diamond. South, having every suit stopp- ed, bid one no trump. North, who was keeping all third hand bids open, even with a very good hand, decided that he must show his

wvo no trump-a bold bid, but one king and led back the nine ai that is generally considered fore-spades, which the declarer won ing due to the faet that a one no trump response does not show any tricks.

South now took the long gamble and bid three no trump, and we find the declarer in a game con- tract when the bidding should have been simply one diamond, South one no trump, all pass,

The Play

West opened the six of clubs. Dummy's king lost to East's ace, and East returned the four ai clubs, dummy winning with the

jack.
