Mr. Gordon Lowder's father, the late Mr. J. F. Lowder, joined the British consular service in Japan in the year 1860. He was called to the English Bar in 1872, and resigned from the consular norvice the same year in order to take up an appointment as legal adviser to the Yokohama Kencho. which he held until 1888, when ho commenced private legal practise.
