TOTE CLUBS DOOMED

MOVE FOR TOTAL-

SUPPRESSION

PERIOD OF GRACE

FOR "DOGS" -

London, Feb. 7.

Among the first announce- ments made by the Government upon the re-assembly of Parlia ment to-day was the decision of the Cabinet to suppress the ""Toto" clubs.

#pokesman

The Government added that if the existing law proved inadequate, any mensures necessary would be introduced for the complete suppression of the "Toto" clubs.

The use of totalisatora upon greyhound racing tracka has been held to be illegal, but no legislation In this connexion will be intro- duced until the receipt of the final recommendations of the Royal Commission.

It will be recalled that the Bet- ting Commisalon issued an interim report three weeks ago unanimous- ly recommending that Totaliaator: betting in clubs and on greyhound race tracks be brought to an end as soon as possible.

INDUCING THE BETTING HABIT.

The Commission stated: "We regard Totalisator clubs, or any similar development, na grave social menace. While in some areas these clubs may to some extent supplant the business previously transacted with street bookmakers, we are satisfied that, for the most part, they afford ad- ditional facilities for betting, and Berve to induce the betting habit In sections of the community which would not otherwise ac quire the habit.

"Further, Tote clubs offer the type of facilities for continuous gambling which has for many years been recognised by the legi Inture as increasing appreciably the social evils resulting from gambling. The organisation of such facilities on a credit basia in calculated to heighten the rais chief."-Router.
