VEHICULAR FERRY
ON TRIALS.
MAN KUNG GIVES ENTIRE SATISFACTION
Entire satisfaction was expressed by the owners and builders yester day on the completion of the of clal trial run of the s.a. Man Kung. first of the new vehicular ferries
built by the Hongkong and
Whampon Dock Company to the order of the Hongkong and Yau- mati Ferry Company for their now and motor combined passenger vehicular sorvien between Hong- kong and Kowloon.
There is something strangely of the weird in the appearance craft, which may be due to a con- trast of type by comparision with the ordinary ferry boat we have been accustomed to in these waters. The Man Kung is almost one-third un broad so it is long; which means that in spite of the superstructure, the craft has a noticeably squat ap pearance. Its performance, how- ever, is not to bo gauged by out ward semblances, for in the rigid teats through which it was put yea- terday it exceeded the contracted apeed of 10 knots, and revealed a if mobility remarkable degree which augurs well for the par- ticular service for which it is in- tended.
The trials were conducted over a mensured course of a mile in Kew- loun Bay, the Man Kung being given six runs at full speed. On each occasion it exceeded the con- tracted speed, the best being per- formed at 10.2 knots.

and driving twin propellors at either end as desired, worked smoothly and gave no trouble. There was a remarkable absence of vibration even at top speed, and the vessel was entirely steady under

A variation to the tests, when the vessel was operated at graded speeds and also subjected to other conditions, demonstrated astonish- ing mobility and powers of turning. The Man Kung, it was amply de- monstrated, could turn completely in its own length.
A contribating to this satin- factory condition of affairs, those concerned are to be complimented on their choice of the clectric hydraulle steering gears unch of which is controlled by telenotor from separate wheelhouses. Tho ferry, so to speak, leaps to the slightest guiding touch of the helmsman, the steering gear be cause of the special features.attach- ed, being responsive to the degree of sensitiveness,

cars, or 12-3 ton lorries. Abrenst of this on each side, and in the saloon below the main deck, 100' 3rd. class passengers will be car- ried, 275 first class and 100 second class passengers will be carried on separate shade decks.
The ferry is as stated, propelled by two "Gardner" Full Diesel Engines, cach developing 400 B..P. and by means of clutches will operate twin propellers at either end as desired.
The electric hydraulic steering gears each controlled by telemoto: from separate wheelhouses aro fitted below deck and are direct connected to two rudders at each end. Warping and anchor handling is carried out by means of four electric cnpstans.
