Paris, Feb. 3.

The draw was made to-day for the European Zone of the Davis Cup Competition and one of its noteworthy features is that Bri- tain has fallen into the luckiest section of the draw.

As far as can be seen, the British players will be presented with very little opposition until they meet Italy in the quarters finals.

South Afrien, Australi and Japan, on the other hand, havej been decidedly unlucky. Three of the strangest teams in the com- petition, they have all been group-| ed together in the bottom quarter of the diaw,

DOMINIONS' CLASH.

Australia and South Afrien cingh in their second matches sul the winner will be called upon to face Japan who this year are ex- pected to have the strongest tenm ever entered. The recent form of the Australians, though somewhat erratic, gives them hopes of get- ting through this stiff passage.

It is known that when Sir Francis Lindley, the Bri- tish Ambassador, called upon Count Uchida at the Tokyo Foreign Office a few days ago, he went with ex- press instructions to urge Japan to refrain from mili- tary operations in Jehol pending a final effort at con- ciliation by the League and that the reply was not satis
