CONTRACT BRIDGE

By W. E. McKenney

"Do you ever bid a hand con- taining less than three high-eard tricks in the one over one system?" is a question often asked. This is Occasionaly done. For example, take the following hand:

Spades K-QJ-4-2 Hearts-KQ-J-3-2 Diamonds-5

Clubs-4-3.

The hand contains two strong five-card major suits, but only two high-card tricks.

If you open with one apade and partner responds with a no trump, clubs or diamonds, you will

bo

able to bid two hearts. Now, if he makes a re-bid, you can sign the hand off with a bid of three spades. For example, supposing by the bidding were one spado you, two diamonds. by partner, you bid two hearts, three clubs from partner. You should now the bid three spades and sign hand off.

Supposing, however, that the diamonds and hearts were veraed in this hand, as follows:

Spaden-K-Q-J-4-2

Hearts-6

Diamonds-K-Q-J-3-2

Clubs 4-3

TC-

The hand should now be passed. While it contains identically the same cards, two strong suits and two high-card tricks, hore le your problem.

If you open with one spade, I partner will very probably re- spond with two hearts because you hold a singleton heart and the odds are greatly in favour of his holding hearts if he has any bid at all.

Holding a singleton heart, you would be forced to show your sec ond suit with a bid of three dia- monds, and undoubedly partner'a next response would be either three no trump or four cluba and you would be away up in the up- per heavens with this hand with- out any high-card tricks.

It is all right to bid two suit hands even though you do not have a great number of high-card tricks, if you will realize what may happen, and if you are in a position to handle all of the altu ations so that the bidding docs not get out of rench,

1 give you the above example not to impress upon you the fact that In the one over one system of contract bidding we may open with two high-card tricks, but rather to show you the flexibility of the system that it is based upon absolute common sense, and sound reasoning.

What I wish my readers to re alize in making a first or second- hand bid in the one over one sys- tem, is that it is not only high- card tricks and biddable suits that count, but that, most important of all, your hand must be flexible so as to make it possible to han- dle intelligently any bid that part- ner may make without carrying the bidding into a danger zone.

To-morrow we will take up the original no trump bide.
