When Herr Pfenningar poses and writes out a piece of music, It does not have to be play- ed by a band or any musical instru- ment, but the public can hear it Just the same. He writes on the sound track of a "talklo" film.

At a meeting of the German Kinotechnical Society Herr Plen- ninger claimed that he can repro- duce the compositions of others in this way, and alno compose music containing gradations of pitch and intervals which are, beyond the power of any known musical in- strument.

Herr Pieminger does not write direct on to the film but draws the "vibration lines" on paper and then transfors them.

Mr. E. A. Humphries, Technical Director of the ducers' Distributing Company, Ltd., who also draws sound paper for reproduction, explained some of the possibilities which are opened up by the new technique.

Here are some of his suggestions. New musical instruments may be designed to produce sound forms which have been found by trial to be valuable for orchestration. The drawing on paper will come first, and then the instrument, to produce it naturally.

One broadcast announcer with a perfect reproducing voice could be made to serve an indefinite num- ber of stations. The inflections of hia voice would be noted, and the same man could be made to deliver a hundred different stations at the Anme time.

The phonograph, Mr. Humphriss thinks, may lose its value as legal evidence of a conversation, man might talk innocently before it for a quarter of an hour, and then be convicted on the strength of a single fucriminating sentence, drawn in to conform with his real epecch.

And then animals. It will be possible, it appears, to make a cow or any other animal sing, by reproducting the quality of a no- tural note over any desired range; and parrots, those notoriously perverse talkers, could be made to say anything which their owner wished-on à sound record,

The Stock Exchange, the most sensitive of all barometers of national feeling, has begun to think once more in terms of future revival.

"The present opportunity, the most promising sinec depression began, is far too precious to be lost for want of courageous collective action,"

The best form of “collective action" the Hongkong business man can take is to advertise jointly-in the South China Morning Post and the Hongkong Telograph which will give him casily the best
