SHANGHAI, JAN. 4.

AFTER BITTER STREET FIGHTING, SHAN- HAIKWAN HAS AGAIN BEEN OCCUPIED BY THE JAPANESE, WHO ARE NOW CONSOLIDAT- ING THEIR POSITION.

Japanese infantry made their final successful attack early yesterday afternoon and the Chinese retired at about two o'clock.

Details of the fighting are, naturally, very scanty at present. The Chinese fought fiercely and were heavily bombarded from land, sea and air before they gave way. Chinese claims to have launched a counter- attack and recaptured the city on Monday appear to be confirmed by the reports from Japanese sourées.

The large naval and military reinforcements brought up by the Japanese turned the battle.
