CINEMA, SCREENINGS

NOTES SUPPLIED BY THE THEATRES

A new mode in eyebrows has been Introduced by Marlene Dietrich. In "Blondlo Vanus," her latest, picture,} which comes to the King's Theatre to- morrow, she again displays the slant- ing, oriental eyebrow make-up that she wore in "Shanghai Express Though originally she intended it only for the one picture, hor 'own lik ing for the innovation was seconded Bo heartily by movie fans that she decided to rotain it. In "Blondo Vonus" she is cast as the wife of an alling scientist, whose only chance for! life is in a visit to an expert abroad. To raise the money, she goes to works in a alght club. There she attracts the attention of a wealthy young politician. He falls in love with her, and provides her with the money necessary to send her husband abroad, Meanwhile, she discovers that she loves him, and when the husband. cured, returns and discovers the situa tion, she faces a decision which leads to a dramatic climax. Gary Grant, conaldered one of the most promising of the now crop of young male players, plays the role of the lover, with Herbert Marshall, well-known Eng. lish star of the dramatic stage, as the husband

John Gilbert in "Dowstairs."

John Gilbert turns author and villain at the same time in "Down- stairs," his latest starring pictura playing at the Queen's Theatre from to-morrow. As an author ho hasi furnished one of the strangest and most gripping plots the screen has seen in some time. As na actor ho gives the screen a debonair, un ecrupulous villain who makes up in audacity what he lacks in morals. The star upset all precedent, abandoning romantic rolea to play this part, # cold-blooded characterization which might have been written for a Von Stroheim-In fact it was once planned that Gilbert direct the Austriaù screen malefactor in "Downstairs." There is a terrific dramatic climax in which a vengeful husband wreaks a blood- light curdling revenge. There are comedy moments when the villain gally hoodwinks royalty and servants alike. There are tense dramatic mo ments, when he escapes detection by sbeer audacity. Paul Lukas as the vengeful butler plotting a terrible ro tribution for the man who has ruined his home is superb. Virginia Bruce offers a distinguished portrayal of the lady's maid who fails a victim to the villain's wiles. And excellent work is done by Hedda Hopper, Reginald Owen, Olga Baclanova, Bodli Rosing, Otta Kofman, Lucien Littlefield and Marlon Messing:

"Dance Team.”

The popularity of those lovable "Bad Girl" stars, Jumca Dunn and Sally Ellera is again proved in their latest picture, "Dance Team" at the King's Theatre. In the roles of two penniless hut infinitely ambitious dancers who yearn for fame and for- tune of the Vornon Castle variety and who after many hardships and struggles achieve the much coveted Buccess, only to

slip see it again through their fingers, their perform

aro simply superlative. And likewise the performances of tho members of the large supporting cast, which includea, Minna Gombell, who also played with Dunn and Misal Eilers in "Bad Girl," Ralph Morgan, Harry Boreford, Edward Cenndall, Mora Lane, Charles Williams and Claire Maynard.
