The hearing
was concluded
rocently of the libel action by Mr. Lealio Martin Summers, of. Balden-road,
Cheam. Surrey, against Bir Wyndham Childs, formerly Assistant Commissioner of the Metropolotan Police, and Obhams Press, Limited.
Mr. Summera complained of an article in "John Bull" which, ho alleged, imputed dishonesty by him.
The defence was a denial that the words were defamatory.
Evidence was called for the defendants in support of their defence that the words complained of were true in their ordinary and natural meaning.-
Mr. Comyns Carr, K.C., com- menting on the fact that Sir Wyndham Childs had not given. evidenco, stated that, he had been denied the opportunity of asking him he were not ashamed of making use of "John Bull" to blast the reputation of a young man like Mr. Summers.
Summing up. Lord Hewart Bald that Mr. Summera seemed to have been very unlucky in his Associates. He was brought into the article quite incidentally and the jury must not forget that It stated that he might have been quite an innocent party. They knew now that Summers was in- volved in police court proceedings, but was discharged on the ground that there was no case against him to go for trial,
The jury found in favour of Mr. Summers and awarded him £100 damages. Judgment this amount and cents was entered against both defendants.
