"WEEK-END` MURDER"
(Continued from Page 3.) .
nessey plunged with gusto into the battle. Logic ho had none not, Linda opserved, any more toler- ance than Cousin Amos, But the sweep of his rich vocabulary and his poetic farvor-to say nothing of a voice which undor the stress of excitement rivaled the Bull of Bashan's-swept the discussion from his own restless island straight across Europe to the no less East. By sheer spate of words he might have won, had he not been so unwise as to quoto disparagingly a supposed oficial order to English troops in India.

Instantly he met flat contradic- tion from Slatlander, speaking with the curt brevity of a military officer to an Inferior or of a school- master and a bad-tempered one- to the class dunce. The direct challenge of personal knowledge (the man did seem to know India and recent happenings there!) might have checked Shaughnessy had not his temper been lashed so high.
Undaunted, he took on this now opponent, roaring down with flory invective the rala of concrete facts with which the middle westerner assailed him. At last Marvin Pratt, whoso gathering frown had been turned first to- ward one contestant, then to the other, broke in with the akill of a trained speaker and, after a mordent of out-roaring each, managed to win momentary silence and skirted the political issue neatly, focusing attention on an anecdote of the Khyber Pass and his own Ex- periences in the Himalayas. Tom deferentially asked Satatlander for the exact height of a newly dia covered peak and the balt worked, Peace was established and Linda- felt rather wenk.
"Why will Cousin Amos start set- ting people right on the slightest provocation?" she thought, rentem- boring similar unhappy occasions. "However, both these men egged him on. First I thought they all had travel in common and now I can add something else- terrible temper."
Then she remembered that one voice remained unheard. She turn- ed, half-laughing, to the man on her right. He was looking not at her, but at the still smoldering com. batants, and utter contempt, un- munked, etched his finely cut fea- tures into repellant harshness. Feeling her glance, he turned, but without attempting to wipe from his face that contemptuous look. He must assume her agreement in all that it said of her guests. Ilia nod included with equal scorn the oratorical Cousin Amos, slightly miffed and now limiting his au- dience to his dinner partner, and the Cult whose once ingratintingly boyish face had gone white and bit- ter with the temper of his argu- Hunt.
"Over things lower than human," said that gentle, slightly necented verce beside her, its quiet syllables dripping like ice into her brain. "These--animals-serfs-in India. i have seen them!" He shrugged. "Their rights! England is too kind, They did things better in our colonles-before the war-in Africa!"
What did he mean? The Belgian Congo? From Linda's childhood flashed a sudden memory of horror.
