MONTHS OF ISOLATION FOR
BRITISH SCIENTISTS
A message has been received from six British scientists who are undergoing a winter's voluntary isolation in Fort Rae, Northern Canada which is reputed to be one of the "cold poles" of the earth, in order to make Arctic observations.
No further message is expected for some months.
Temperatures of 100 to 110 degrees below freezing are expect- ed, although it is estimated that at the North Pole itself there are never more than 85 degrees of frost. Mr. J. M. Stagg, the leader of the expedition, states that the party is "looking forward to the experience with pleasurable anticipation."

In addition to wireleas and weather observations, a record will be made of the magnetic changes which have taken place since the last "polar year," 50 years ago.
All the instruments have been successfully erected in working order, and it is stated that until September 18, the date of the despatch, everything had gone well.
Fort Rac is in the reserve of the Dog Rib Indians. For this reason shooting is forbidden to the party, and their dealings with the Indians are limited to barter.
In addition to Mr. Stagg, the members of the expedition are Mr. W. R. Morgan (Wales), Mr. P. A. Shepherd (Bath), Mr. A. Stephenson (Norwich), Mr.W.* A. Grinsted (Leeds), and Mr. J. L. Kennedy (Twickenham).
