London, Dec. 14. Striking figures regarding the

millions, and by the end of the pre- scht year, Britain's expenditure on war pensions will have reached a figure of £1,000,000,000 and la be- ing continued at a rate of nearly a million pounds weekly. These @gures are considerably larger than amounts paid by any other nation which took part in war,

The cust of administration is less than five-pence in the pound. Over 10 per cent. of the disabled are now in sccure possession of their right to pension and despite the subse- quent reduction in the cost of liv ing and severe.economy practised [In practically all other branches of national expenditure, war pension rates have remained uncut since they were fixed in 1919.-British Wireless.

The man who shot Fung was alleged to be a gunman who had been hired at the instance of Cheng. The trial took up a con- siderable period, both in the Police Court and subsequently at the Sessions, and a great deal of sensu- tional evidence was given. The circumstances of the trial are pro- bably still fresh in the public mind. The counsel for the defence at the major trial were Mr. F..C. Jenkin, K.C. Mr. Eldon Potter, K.C., and Mr. R. C. H. Lim.

Petition to Governor.

21.

It was known some time ago that a petition had been got up locally, al signed by a number of pro- minent members of the Chinese community, to be presented to H. E. the Governor in the event of the Privy Council appeal failing. The plea is for a remission of the death sentence on Cheng Kwok-ynu, main ly because of his being under age, and also, it is understood, on the grounds of his actions being, cording to the Chinese view, those of one who was virtually affianceu to Lai Ming-fny, whose affections had been alienated by George Fung It is understood that the petition which is to be presented to the Governor-In-Council, is purely a private affair, and has not

Leen handled by Messrs Deacons, Ltd. Relatives of the convicted mah yes- terday professed to have no in- formation regarding the petition, and would make

no statement, other than confirming the unfavour able result of the petition to the Privy Council.
