The fourth defendant, who had pleaded guilty to the charge inrceny, was not legally represent- ed.

Among the witnesses called by Mr. Sin yesterday was Lam Wing-1 shiu, the manager of the South China Drug Store, in which Ho Cheong was employed as a sales- man. Ho testified that the sum of $1,916.07 was paid over by him to Ho Cheong, who in turn, handed the money to Li Wah-chun, on August 14, In payment for 1,000) bottles of this modicine.

the interest of the Licenses Com pany and of the Community, and for equipmoat, the Plors aro, -a mattor for the P.W.D. and if any one has been interested enough to watch them during construction, ho must surely be satisfied that they are well up to the Depart mont's standard of work, which is a very high one. The Treasurer has been juggling a little with the figures recently as he is fond of i doing, but the fact romsina that the Englacera Estimate of the cost of tho actual construction has worked out very accurately indeed. Then thoro are the boata themselves; we can get nothing better and we want nothing better than the producte of the ILK. and Whampoa Dock Co. Mr. Cock opened my eyes to the minute care devoted to detall by himself ralaing a small point which resulted in a whole fleet of marine engineers aitting around a tablo in my office arguing over plans and models which left me hopelessly in the air-but he got his point settled and agreed. It was all very diflcult, heenuse we must not forgot that we are try- ing an experiment which may even be unique, establishing a forry for Vehicles and 3 classes of passengera, I recommend any one who is fond of jigsaw puzzles to work out the problem of quick shipping and landing in these con- ditions, remembering that the passengers must not crowd to one- alde, no tilting the vessel as to mako the Journey difficult for Vehicles. With piers and honts of class Al standard there remains the management, there we are on very firm ground. I have been privileged for quite a number of years to deal with the Lau family in connexion with the Yaumati Ferrien, at first with Mr. Imu Tak Po's brother, Mr. Lau King Cho, whose recent untimely death was a sad blow to the family and|---

great loss to the Company and the Community. But his mantle has fallon on his brother, and it Bits. And the efficiency and broad- minded enterprise and energy: with which the Yaumati Ferries have been run and continue to be run are the best possible augury for the success of this wider scheme of a Vehicle Ferry (Ap- plause.)

So we are well set in every re- gard, and it only remains to get the system working and to wait for the success that cannot fall to attend it. It is a knowledge of the possibilities that has grent- ly enhanced my wife's apprecia- tion of the high compliment pald to her to-day, by the Invitation to perform this launching ceremony. and the good luck she wished the Man Kim was, you may be assured no empty form of words. (Ap- plause.)

DANCING EXHIBITION.

CLEVER DISPLAY AT KİNG'S RESTAURANT YESTERDAY

Giving a delightful exhibition of English ballroom dancing. Mr. Leslie Buckle and Miss Edith Now- MAD, well-known championship dancers, yesterday entertained a big gathering at the King's Re- staurant tea and dinner dances.

It is very seldom that Hongkong has the opportunity of seeing an exhibition of ballroom dancing as it is performed among the loading exponents in England to-day, and it is no exaggeration to say that Mr. Buckle and Miss Newman, who have won honoura in open cham-: pionships at Home, fully came up to expectations.

At both dances they demonstrat- ed the waltz, slow foxtrot, fox-trot and quick step, each being per- formed with charming artistry and embodying the latest principles of modern dancing. They enjoyed an enthusiastic reception, and it is to be hoped that this will not bo their last public appearance

in Hongkong ballrooms.

Both competed in the Midlands Championship and the Columbia All-England Championships

la

1930, being finalists in the former and winning through to the semi-i final of the latter in face of com- petition of some of England's leading doneprs.

An added attraction, and one in which the company thoroughly 10- velled, was the appearance of Mr. G. F. d'Aquino, popular local tonor, who gave a series of songs In Els bent style, his pupâlar song.

Defendant Convicted.

His Worship, however, held that the case had been proved and con- victed Ho Cheong of unlawfully receiving.

Mr. Lo informed his Worship! that he had been instructed by the complainant to ask that the be dealt with AA defendants leniently as possible.

A fine of $250 or three months. each was imposed.

hit numbers being especially woll

received.

"Gory" and his "Melodiana" provided the music, and the King's Restaurant management can rest. satisfied in the success of the event, which reflects the utmost credit un all concerned.
