RECORDER. AND CONDUCT OF TWO SOLICITORS

"I am sure that the conduct of the solicitora concerned will re- ceive the attention of the Law Society, old the Recorder · (Sir Ernest Wild, K.C.) at the Old bailey at the conclusion of a case of fraudulent conversion.

Ho passed sentence of four years' penal servitude on Edwin Frederick Appleton, aged 37, a solleitor's clerk, of Southend, who ploaded guilty to the fraudulent conversion of £2,506 belonging to

Southend with which he had been concerned. He admitted other dofalcations totalling £969.

Mr. J. D. Cassels, K.C. (prose- cuting), said that the frauda were in connexion with a firm of soll- citors, of which Appleton was managing clerk, and of an estato agency of his own.

Mr. Christmas Humphreys (de- fending) said the explanation was that the solicitor who formerly owned the business decided to give It up. Appleton was afraid he would lose his employment and he

to save what he thought was a good business. He offered to finance it and to bring In a solicitor. Two solicitors had been connected with the business but they were mere cyphers.

The Recorder said that he would Bay nothing about the solicitors said to have lent themselves, by Kiving their names, to a business which they did not conduct. Apple- ton was the solicitor's business and anyone else wha lent his nume was a mere shadow.
