CONTRACT BRIDGE
By W. E. McKenney
Editor's Note: This is the sixth of the articles by Mr. McKenney explaining the one over one system for contract bridgo.
Contrary to the general practice used at auction bridge, third or fourth hand, under the one over one nystem in contract, may open on much less strength than la required for either first or second hand,
The third or fourth hand bidder is confronted with an entirely dif forent situation from that of the Arst or second hand bidder. Part- ner has passed and he may have passed a vory good band, but one that could not meet the heavy re- quirements to make a firat or sec ond hand bid. Therefore third or fourth hand should make what is known as a protective or defonalva bid.
The requirements for an origi- Mar. nat suit bid for one, third or fourth Mar. 20 hand, are 2 to 21⁄2 high card tricks and a biddable suit, and it is not necessary to have a re-bld. All that the third or fourth hand bidder is attempting to do is to protect partner's hand and to work for 8 partial score.

The auction player taking up contract will frequently make the mistake of opening the bidding with what he believes to be a fair hand Instead of adhering strictly to the requirements as outlined in this system. It will be found after playing contract a few times that no trouble will be experienced in passing fairly strong first and sec- ond hands while being prepared to enter the bidding on the Recond round, and bidding rather weak third and fourth hands either for protective bids or for defensive purposes.
*
*
In the one over one system, only hands of exceptional strength are opened with anything more than an original bid of one, therefore It naturally follows that, due to the strong requirements especial- ly for first and second hand bids, partner may keep the bidding open holding very little strength.
Partner should give the origi- And bidder what we term a chance by replying to a suit bid of one with a bid of at least one trump holding as little as two queens or a king and a juck.
no
It is true that there are types of hands that may be passed, but those are in the minority and at the start it is far better to keep all original first or second hand bids open with one no trump with as little as two queens.
Third fourth hand vulner- able bids may be passed unless partner's hand contains a king and a queen, when a bid of one no trump should be made.
In the one over one system the the bidding with a very strong original bidder may have opened
hund. The next hand passing shows a certain amount of weak- | ness; and while there are a few lands where partner may get into trouble by keeping the bidding open with one no trump, they are in the minority and more is to be gained by giving partner another opportunity to hid.
To-morrow wo will take up the proper responses to original suit bids of one,

AUSTRALIAN COMEDIENNES AT PENINSULA HOTEL
The large crowd which attended Saturday night's dinner dance in: the Rose Room of the Peninsula Hotel were entertained by two Australian girls, "The Mayo Sle- ters." in three pleasing numbers.
These versatile young Indios | presented a comedy sketch, "The Raw Recruit" In a manner that evoked hearty laughter. Their eccentric dancing and finally their tap dancing mado them firm favouriten.
Before leaving for Saigon to ful- | fil an engagement, the Maye Sis. tera will appear nightly at dinner dancen in the Peninsula Hotol Rose Room,
