BURMA SURPRISE

ANTI-SEPARATIST MAJORITY

ELECTION RESULT

Rangoon, Nov. 17.

The electorate "sprung a profound surprise upon official circles in the elections to the Legislative Council.

The main issue between the ean didates was whether or not Burma should be separated from India, The separation was recommended at the meetings of the Burma) Round Table Conference and was thought that the majority of the people of Burma were Aup porters of the separatint move ment.

The

anti-Separationists, however, obtained forty-one seats and the Separationists only 28. Neutrals were elect- ed to nine нents, while two re- sults are still outstanding. In one of these, all the candi- dates are anti-Separatlonists.

Thun the Legislative Councillors who are opposed to separation will have a complete majority of contested seats.

It is still hoped by the Separa: tionists, however, that a change of view will prevail before the meets ing of the Council, in which there are also twenty-three nominated und ex-officio members.-Reuter.
