There is a popular saying which goes, "Lay down your aces against a alam contract." That is often the best defence when the slam 18 bid in a Boit, but it is of very doubtful value against a six no trump contract.

An ace is seldom lost at no trump, and to take it in immediato- ly is often playing directly into the declarer's hand. However, the West player in the following band selected the wrong time to under- load his ace, and a clevor squeeze by the declarer caused him to lose it entirely.

South opened with one diamond to which North responded with one heart- one over one force. South next bid three no trump.

Far from being a sign-off, this declaration showed a band of tre- mendous strength and

Wan un urgent invitation to try for a slam. North responded with four no trump and this was all the couragement that South needed to carry the bidding to six no trump, which became the final contract.

The Play.

West could have played his ace of clubs, thereby making sure that the contract would be held to six. However, by leading the jack of clubs, he would have at least a fair chance to establish another trick in that suit.

Accordingly, he aetected that lead. and South won in her own hand with the king of clubs. She now played the queen and jack of hearta, and when West discarded a club on the second heart trick she knew he would be desperately aqueezed by a continuation of that suit.

A small heart was led to dum- my's king, on which West dlacard- ed the ten of clubs, but when the ace of hearts was led he was in a hopeless dilemma.

To discard the ace of clubs was out of the question, and since the declarer had bid diamonds it seem- ed advisable to keep all possible strength in that Bult. West's best discard was a small spade, but on seeing the discard the declarer im- mediately led two rounds of that auit and entered dummy again with the queen of diamonds.

The queen of spades now dropped the jack and ten together, and when the nine of apades was led, West was again squeezed. To diacari the ace of clubs would establish dummy's queen, and a diamond dis- card would allow the declarer to make all the remaining tricks in that suit.

Therefore South made seven no trump and West's BCE WOR effectually put to sicep,

OTTAWA AIDS

INDIA URGES ACCEPTANCE OF AGREEMENT

New Delhi, Nov. 7, A resolution urging the recep tance of the Ottawa agreement was moved to-day by Sir Joseph Bhore, who declared that without the preference secured at Ottawa, the tea industry might have met with irretrievable disaster. He said that 55 per cent. of Indian imports should still be outside the proferences granted Britain, while in return, Indin received valuable help in opening out great possibilities in the expanalon of articles like vegetable oils, seeds and rice. Moreover the pre- fetences exchanged between India and the Colonial Empire held out a promise of considerable develop- ment for India's manufactures such as cotton piece goods, yarn, iron and steel;

Sir Joseph Bhore claimed that nothing could be fairer than a provision allowing India to tor minate the

states that damage estimated at Ave million' francs was done when a great firo broke out in à seaplane factory at St. Denis yesterday morning.

The outbreak destroyed three huge sheds containing stocks of wood, paint and varnishes.
