WAR WITHIN THE B.B.C.

ENGINEERS GET UPPER HAND

The throo B.B.C. delegatos to the Madrid Radio Congress have unmasked their guns. in the matter of interference between transmitting stations the British [proposals are that there should be a maximum power allowed to any atation in proportion to the aren which it has to cover to serve its own country. This is an attempt to confine broadcasting within na- tional boundaries.

It has boon well known for many years that there is a mild state of war exlating within tho British Broadcasting Corporation.

The engineers, jealous for the reputation of their stations as re- gards quality, would have all lg- toners confine themselves to their local transmitter. This may be overstating the case, but it in- dicates the frame of mind of those responsible for transmission.

On the other hand the Corpora- tion haa adepted as its motto, "Nation shall speak peace unto Nation," and its publielty depart ment, by the weekly issue of worldwide programmes, encour nges British listeners to seek their entertainment among foreign stations.

Apparently the, engineors have had their own way with regard to suggestions for minimising inter- ference, That they will have any appreciable success in persuading the very high-power stations to reduce their aerial wattage is un likely.

Four of the highest-power ata- tions are Russian, and though they definitely exist for рго- paganda purposes, Can excuse their enormous radiating capabili- ties on the ground that their own country covers a huge aren. The other very high-power stations, though not definitely propagan- dlat, are probably regarded as having considerable value in ad- vertising their country. The catch phrase, "A place in the sun" seems to have turned into "A place in the ether."

Decidedly and definitely modish from Tip to Cork lip...fundamen- tally modern in the frank appeal of its Flavour.....and such d'relief to Sensitive Throats.

In the unlikely event of the Bri- Lish delegation Tu Madrid carrying the day, and the Congress agree who would confine all listening to

Recent

investigation have shown that it is not unlikely that the whole of wireless transmission has grown up on a wrong founda- tion, and that it may be possible within the next year or two, to

transmit the whole musical scale within the narrow confines of the ordinary carrier wave.

If this can be done the inter- ference problem would disappear, but only if all transmitting stations are completely redoaign.
