WATER SERVICE

· AB, 1600,

RESTRICTIONS.

TO BE IMPOSED ON MONDAY

With last winter's acute water shortage still fresh in mind, the Government has early taken stepa to impose restrictions in order to avoid public inconvenience.

From Monday water will be available only between 6 and 11 a.m. and 4 and p.m.

In an official statement! laat night on the water position the Government sold:

The total water storage of the Colony amounts, to 2,703.51 mil- Hon gallons as against 2,780 mil- Hon gallons at this time last year. The explanation of the reduced Aguro this year is to be found in the largely Increased consumption, which has risen from a weekly total of 118 m.g to one of 12734 m.K. It is not possible to draw Increased supplion from Shing Mun before next wet season, and it is not probable that there will be any effective rainfall during the coming dry Benson. It IN obvious therefore that restric- tion of some kind must be enforc ed if the supplies are to be de pended upon to hold out against a possible failure of the earlier Spring rains.

It is considered that a compara. tively alight restriction enforc- ed from the early stages will bear Jess hardly on the community than a full supply for the time being with severc restrictions to fol. low.

Hoarding Unnecessary.

It is proposed therefors to make restrictions from Monday Novem ber 7 in a manner which should in. terfere as little as possible with the daily life of any section of the community and which will make hoarding of any kind unneces- Rory: But the co-operation of every individual is called for to prevent waste in the smallest de- gree, and to make it possible to carry through to next wet season with no increase in the restriction.

The restriction now imposed ap- piles to the whole Colony, and a special word of caution is called for. The condition of this year, with the complete abolition of the rider main system and the con- sequent restriction of the whole Colony in the early alages, are new, and the result of the experi ment has yet to be awaited. The possibility of further restrictions must always be kept in mind, and it will depend on the efforts of in- dividual consumers whether or not they will be called for.

WUCHOW BOAT SUNK.

FORMER H.K.-WUCHOW

VESSEL

A thick fog is alleged to be the cause of disaster to the well known Canton-Wuchow passenger and cargo steamer, the a.. Kwok Tai, a Chinese owned vessel flying the Chinese lag.

On Tuesday morning the vass: siruck a rock

foundered at and Samshui.

The a.. Kwok Tal was on its way back to Canton from Wachow carry- ing a number of passengers and

a full cargo. The place where the vessel net with the mishap Is Ma

nu.

The steamer was holed and water was coming in, but the officers had the presence of mind to rush her to Ma Hau, where sanipans which were waiting to carry passengers to their destination, were able to take off all on board. There was no time tu look after the cargo, which was estimated at over $100,000,

The steamer now lies fully sub- merged, save the funnels.

Reports here has been circularized by the Samshul custome authorities to all steamers on the route, so that enre may be exercised in

passing the scene of the accident.

The ar. Kwak Tai is a sister vossel in .. Man On, another Canton- Wuchow steamer. The s.o. Kwok Tai was formerly known as the s.8, Sai Fu. For some time she traded tween ilongkong and Wuchow.
