On October 6, It was stated, an amah employed on an upper floor occupied by Li Po-yuen, concubine of a tradesman, had occasion to open the door opening on to the staircase, and, as she did so, four men, who had apparently been watt- ing for that opportune moment, forced her back and themselves entered the floor.

In nearly every case opened with a pre-emptive bid of four spades. West, refusing to be shut out, bid five hearts, North bid five spades which West doubled. With such an array of high cards We can hardly blame West for ex- pecting a very large penalty.

Eventually, the leader succeeded in shaking off his adversary, but was pursued down the stairs into the street, and finally caught by a shop foki in a side street. After drawing one round of trump, he was able to ruff three losing hearts in dummy and discard the last one on the established queen of diamonds,

which of course permitted him to make the contract of five spades doubled.

Probably the best defence for West is to shift to the king of spaden after winning the first heart trick. However, declarer can still make his contract by leading diamonds at every onnor- tunity, and eventually establish- Ing a winning diamond in dummy on which to discard a heart. If South plays the hand can confine his losses to one heart correctly he and one diamond, thereby making five spades against any

defence West can offer, despite His over- powering array of aces and kings.
