If North felt justified in bid-operator. ding two spades, the ball was started rolling and every bid thereafter cost extra points. Some. pulrs were down as many as four tricks on that deal.

However, if North reasoned carefully he should have reuched the proper conclusion. South's hand could not contain more than moderate strength, for he had passed originally. He should have at least five hearts to justify his two-heart overcall, and that bid was probably a danger signal to warn that he did not have spade support. Therefore, North's best course was to pass in spite of his singleton heart.

Thus the opponenta took two diamonda and diamond ruff, two spades, one club, and one heart at the end, defeating the contract two tricks.

Allowing South credit for his 100 honours, the net penalty was 200 points, and that was top score for North and South. North would also have been down at a two apade contract, but without the componsating honours,
